Salt Lake City School District commits to carbon neutrality by 2040 with Sustainability Action Plan

The Salt Lake City School District, one of Utah's largest districts, faced the challenge of meeting its ambitious goals for carbon neutrality and creating healthier learning environments. Partnering with vendor McKinstry through an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC), the district sought a cost-neutral solution to modernize operations across its 40 buildings.

McKinstry implemented a comprehensive district-wide Sustainability Action Plan, which included LED lighting retrofits, solar power installations, building controls optimization, and the electrification of schools. These efforts resulted in a significant measurable impact: an annual reduction of 44,000 metric tons in carbon emissions, $1.3 million in utility cost savings, and a decrease in water consumption by 11 million gallons per year. The project by McKinstry provided a major leap forward for the district in achieving its long-term sustainability goals.
