A McGraw Hill Case Study
The University of Rhode Island needed a way to give students a personalized experience and streamline grading in its large, fully online Nutrition and Food Sciences 207 classes (four sections of ~100 students, ~750 students/year). Instructors Larson and Missimer integrated McGraw Hill’s Connect® Nutrition—including SmartBook, NutritionCalc Plus and the Assess My Diet question bank—with the campus LMS (D2L Brightspace) to support a personalized Dietary Assessment Project and course assessments.
Using McGraw Hill’s Connect tools and Intelligent Response autograded questions, the course shifted from 10% to 75% Connect-based content, automated grade export to the LMS, and freed instructor time for individualized feedback. Outcomes included measurable score gains (Larson’s averages rose from ~76% on Spring exams to ~83–85% on Fall Connect quizzes; Missimer’s from 72% to 84%), 80% of students earned 80% or higher on each DAP component, and an estimated 750 students per year received personalized dietary feedback.
