A McGraw Hill Case Study
Texas Tech University assistant professor Dr. Amber McCord faced a challenge teaching an undergraduate course on the fast-evolving impacts of social media: no single textbook covered the material she wanted, and open educational resources were inconsistent. To solve this, she partnered with McGraw Hill and used their Custom Course Solutions (CCS) platform to build a customized, mobile-friendly digital curriculum that could aggregate articles, videos, simulation and assessment content.
McGraw Hill’s CCS team and Connect Smartbook technology assembled Dr. McCord’s authored materials, OER, and McGraw Hill content into pedagogically linked Compound Learning Objects, published in a matter of months. The platform let her monitor and support 340 students in real time, bring struggling students to faculty attention earlier, and reduce student costs (digital course materials typically cost under $100 versus average annual book/supplies of $1,240); the success has led to broader adoption across Texas Tech communications courses.
