Kapiolani Community College partnered with McGraw Hill to support History 151, an online and lecture-based world history course using McGraw-Hill Connect® History. Instructor Kelli Nakamura needed a more engaging, interactive digital tool for online students because retention and pass rates were low, and the online sections lacked enough interactivity and critical thinking.

McGraw Hill’s Connect and SmartBook were implemented as weekly, untimed assignments with unlimited attempts, along with reporting tools to monitor student progress. The results were strong: online retention rose from 34% to 74%, pass rates increased by about 6%, and exam scores improved, with grades becoming more consistent with face-to-face sections.
