Heavy Reading partnered with Mavenir Systems to examine how communications service providers are approaching network functions virtualization across messaging services, the RAN, and the signaling control plane. The challenge was to understand migration timing, preferred orchestration and deployment models, and the biggest business and technical barriers to virtualization as operators move toward commercial NFV deployments.

Mavenir Systems sponsored a custom Heavy Reading survey and market analysis that assessed CSP readiness and priorities for virtualizing SMS/MMS, vRAN, and Diameter-based control plane functions. The study found strong momentum: by the end of 2018, 66% of SMS and 65% of MMS systems were expected to be virtualized, 45% of respondents planned vDSC deployment within 24 months, and most operators were moving forward despite orchestration, interworking, and cultural challenges.
