Case Study: Uber achieves scalable, reliable enterprise messaging with Mattermost

A Mattermost Case Study

Why Uber switched from Slack to Mattermost for enterprise collaboration

Uber, the global ridesharing company, needed an enterprise messaging platform that could scale to tens of thousands of concurrent users across web, mobile and desktop, integrate deeply with workflows, and provide strict security and zero downtime—capabilities Slack failed to deliver. After finding no off‑the‑shelf solution that met these needs, Uber partnered with vendor Mattermost and chose the Mattermost open source platform as the foundation to build its own internal messaging system, uChat.

Working with Mattermost, Inc., Uber engineers extended the Mattermost platform into a high‑scale, single‑tenant solution, pre‑provisioning thousands of users and migrating 20,000 chat rooms to ensure a smooth rollout. The Mattermost‑based uChat now handles over a million messages per day, scales to tens of thousands of concurrent users, drove rapid adoption with little training, improved reliability compared with Slack outages, and reduced licensing costs and productivity losses by consolidating messaging tools.
