Insight keeps data science fellows connected with Mattermost

Insight Data Science runs fellowship programs that help research scientists and software engineers move into careers in data science, data engineering, security engineering, and DevOps. As the organization scaled across seven offices and multiple program sessions, it needed a communications platform that could preserve historical messages, centralize information, and support onboarding and collaboration for a fast-moving community. Mattermost became the replacement for Slack’s limited free version, giving Insight better search, full control over its data, and a more reliable way to support its distributed teams and Fellows.

Mattermost helped Insight build a centralized communications hub with custom channel structures for each program, streamlined fellow onboarding, real-time peer collaboration, and searchable archives for staff and alumni. The results included faster administration, less one-on-one support, and stronger community connections across more than 2,500 Fellows and alumni. Insight also reported that Mattermost was installed and deployed in under an hour, and that one engineer spends about 10 minutes a week managing it.
