A Mattermost Case Study

Funke Mediengruppe switches from Slack to Mattermost to accelerate its digital transformation through modern communication

FUNKE MEDIENGRUPPE, one of Germany’s leading media houses with over 125 publications and about 6,000 employees, needed to modernize communication to support its digital transformation, speed up newsroom coordination and keep sensitive information under IT control (especially after GDPR). After outgrowing email and a temporary Slack deployment, the publisher chose Mattermost as a self-hosted, private-cloud messaging solution that would give IT full control over data and reduce reliance on email.

Mattermost, deployed with implementation partner bytemine, replaced Slack and integrated with tools like JIRA, Desknet and Nagios to streamline calendars, issue tracking, infrastructure alerts and rapid bug reporting. Today more than 1,300 journalists and technologists use Mattermost (initially 400 users, then an additional 900), helping Funke deliver 125+ publications more efficiently while improving collaboration, employee engagement and organizational agility—all with conversations and IP kept under Funke’s IT control.
