Fairphone, an Amsterdam-based social enterprise with a globally distributed team across Europe, Asia, and Africa, needed a better way to unify collaboration across the company. After privacy and data-retention concerns with Slack, Fairphone looked for an open source, user-friendly alternative that could work on desktop and mobile and support self-hosting.
Fairphone chose Mattermost and deployed it on its private cloud, integrating it with tools like Nagios and LDAP. Mattermost helped eliminate “reply all” email threads, streamlined infrastructure notifications into dedicated channels, and made remote work smoother during COVID-19. Fairphone reports around 90 users and bots posting about 4,000 messages per day, showing strong adoption and measurable communication efficiency gains.
