OSIRIS-REx, NASA’s asteroid sample return mission, needed a secure way to connect a globally distributed team while protecting highly sensitive, export-controlled, and proprietary mission data. The team wanted an alternative to email that would support fast, organized collaboration across time zones and keep information under their own control.

Mattermost provided the solution as a self-hosted collaboration platform, giving OSIRIS-REx secure messaging, channel-based teamwork, file sharing, and API integrations with tools like Jira, Git, and LDAP. With Mattermost, the team automated mission notifications, improved research coordination, and supported sample analysis across 300–400 users, while maintaining data sovereignty and saving time through faster troubleshooting and easier knowledge sharing.
