A Matrix42 Case Study
The University of Vienna, one of Europe’s oldest and largest universities (≈90,000 students, ≈10,400 employees), faced a complex, heterogeneous device landscape and fragmented software distribution with two legacy systems and an internally developed tool. The Central IT Service (ZID) needed a single, licensing‑compliant workspace management platform to standardize administration across roughly 12,000 workspaces; after evaluation they selected Matrix42 (including Matrix42 UEM Empirum, asset, license and service‑catalog capabilities) to meet organizational, technical and audit requirements.
Matrix42 delivered an integrated digital workspace solution—UEM Empirum for distribution, asset management, service catalog, license/contract management and MyWorkspace for Adobe—enabling self‑service installs with a two‑stage approval process and daily preventative compliance reports. The deployment now covers 7,800 managed and 11,400 unmanaged clients, supports 268 rented software products, has processed 112,000 orders (~265,000 transactions) since 2015, and provides cost allocation based on actual use—resulting in automated, standardized processes and significantly improved transparency and control over assets, licenses and costs.
