Weinmann Develops Life-Saving Transport Ventilator Using Model-Based Design

Weinmann Emergency Medical Technology turned to MathWorks when developing the MEDUMAT Transport ventilator’s embedded control software. The ventilator’s many sensors, advanced pneumatics, and dual‑MCU architecture made handwritten code impractical for verification, maintenance, and compliance with rigorous standards (ISO/IEC 62304, ISO 10651‑3, DIN EN ISO 13485, DIN EN ISO 14971). Weinmann used MathWorks’ Model‑Based Design approach with MATLAB and Simulink to address these challenges.

Using MathWorks tools (Simulink, Stateflow, Embedded Coder, Fixed‑Point Designer, DSP System Toolbox, Simulink Coverage), Weinmann modeled and simulated the plant and controllers, generated production code for the Infineon and TI MCUs, and streamlined certification. Results included a 50% acceleration in code development and reviews (100% of embedded software generated excluding drivers), evaluation of up to 40 signal‑processing algorithms, ~60% core design reuse (projected 30% development time savings on the next ventilator), and successful production deployment of MEDUMAT Transport across Europe, Asia, and Australia.
