A MathWorks Case Study
Politecnico di Bari needed a faster, more reliable way to validate permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) parameter identification algorithms without relying on slow real-drive testing, offline measurements, or costly sensors. Working with MathWorks and Simscape Electrical, the research team sought to model hard-to-measure motor parameters such as stator inductance, rotor flux linkage, and stator resistance under real operating effects like temperature variation and magnetic saturation.
MathWorks provided a Simulink/Simscape-based multidomain PMSM model that integrated electrical, thermal, and mechanical behavior into a high-fidelity digital twin. Politecnico di Bari customized the model, used it to test an Adaline neural-network estimation approach, and compared estimated versus simulated parameters, achieving close tracking after transient startup. The approach also cut simulation time from hours to seconds, significantly accelerating algorithm validation and supporting future lab digital-twin work.
