University College London Improves Computational Literacy with Online and Onsite MATLAB Training

University College London, a top‑rated multidisciplinary university, needed a way to teach problem‑based engineering and analytics without building new courses from scratch. Faculty required real‑world problem sets, campus access to industry tools, and an efficient way to onboard first‑year and postgraduate students to those tools — notably MATLAB provided through a MathWorks Campus‑Wide License.

To address this, UCL used MathWorks onsite training and MATLAB Academy online courses to embed MATLAB into a new first‑year Mathematical Modeling and Analysis course and to upskill business analytics master’s students (including use of the Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox and Simulink). The MathWorks training and campus license doubled MATLAB activations in 15 months, drove a 100% increase in student MATLAB use, enabled a student project that helped an energy company cut costs by £59 million, and supported program growth from 50 to 100 students while letting faculty focus on real‑world problem solving.
