UMass Amherst Professor Develops Interactive Computer Vision Apps to Study and Teach Dance Science

UMass Amherst professor Dr. Aston K. McCullough needed a way to give students a virtual lab for dance science when in-person classes were disrupted. Working with MathWorks, he set out to build an interactive digital tool that would let students measure joint angles and analyze dance movement from recorded video across different devices and platforms.

Using MathWorks MATLAB App Designer along with Image Processing Toolbox, Computer Vision Toolbox, MATLAB Compiler, and MATLAB Web App Server, Dr. McCullough created and deployed the app for students, teachers, and researchers. The initial app was delivered in four weeks, and the web version followed in two more weeks, expanding access to a broader user base and generating new research ideas and collaborations.
