Toyota Racing Development Makes Faster and More Efficient Engineering Decisions

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) faces the challenge of turning massive amounts of laboratory and simulation test data into quick, actionable engineering decisions to optimize race car setups. To do this, TRD relies on MathWorks tools—primarily MATLAB along with toolboxes such as Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox—to import, process, visualize, and share data across the Race Vehicle Engineering group.

MathWorks’ MATLAB-based solution (including the Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox, MATLAB Compiler, and Optimization Toolbox) enabled TRD to automate preprocessing and postprocessing, run large batches of simulations, build GUIs, and use an Experimental Design Tool to focus tests. The impact: tire-analysis time fell from days to hours, analysis workflows became reusable and shareable, and TRD converted faster engineering decisions into on-track success—helping Toyota earn four wins and place three drivers in the top 15 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series.
