Toyota Aims to Realize “Seasoned Driving” for Automated Driving System

Toyota set out to reproduce “seasoned driving” — the natural, skilled behavior of a human driver — for automated driving systems and identified model predictive control as a promising approach. To pursue this goal, Toyota used MathWorks tools, including the Model Predictive Control Toolbox together with MATLAB and Simulink, to build a research and simulation environment for control development.

MathWorks enabled Toyota to implement a simulation environment and rapidly design and test model predictive controllers using the Model Predictive Control Toolbox, helping the team explore MPC adoption directions and challenges efficiently. As a result, Toyota advanced research on a control algorithm to achieve seasoned driving, accelerated controller design and testing cycles, and developed a flexible, efficient development workflow with MathWorks’ MATLAB and Simulink.
