A MathWorks Case Study
VisionCare, developer of the Implantable Miniaturized Telescope (IMT) for patients with macular degeneration, faced the challenge of creating a rigorous, per‑lens testing procedure to verify safety and optical performance (MTF, focus, contrast, light scattering) without slowing production. To meet strict quality and regulatory requirements, VisionCare chose MathWorks' MATLAB and the Image Processing Toolbox to develop the test algorithms and operator interface.
Using MathWorks' MATLAB and the Image Processing Toolbox, VisionCare built a GUI‑driven test station that captures images via a CCD/frame grabber, runs FFT‑based MTF and contrast analyses, and applies statistical and curve‑fitting routines to reduce noise. The MathWorks solution produced an easy‑to‑use, accurate QC system, cut development to under 300 hours (3–4× faster than C++), delivered an estimated $25,000 in engineering savings, and supported regulatory progress (EU cleared; FDA approval underway).
