Teaching Project-Based Learning with Model-Based Design to Engineering Students at King’s College

King’s College London sought to formalize its engineering students' approach to complex problems through project-based learning, aiming to teach systems thinking, requirements-based testing, and integration skills. To achieve this, they partnered with MathWorks and utilized products including Simulink and Simscape to provide a robust foundation in Model-Based Design for their curriculum.

MathWorks provided a solution where students used Model-Based Design to develop and test a remote-controlled ship in simulation before building a physical prototype. This approach, implemented by MathWorks, significantly improved student engagement by fostering accountability and ownership. Students gained valuable employable skills in teamwork and systems engineering while experiencing an end-to-end industrial design workflow.
