Stem Speeds Development with Model-Based Design

Stem, Inc., a provider of energy optimization services whose PowerStore product predicts and dispatches stored energy to cut commercial and industrial peak costs, needed to speed development while reducing risk and board-spin costs. Seeking to avoid slow, expensive hardware debug cycles, Stem turned to MathWorks’ Model-Based Design to simulate and validate designs before committing to physical prototypes.

Using MathWorks’ Model-Based Design tools, Stem’s engineers built plant and controller models, simulated hardware behavior to choose optimal inductor and capacitor values, and debugged the design before hardware was available. The MathWorks-enabled workflow reduced iterations to a single additional board spin, shortened IEEE 1547 certification time by about 25%, and saved weeks and tens of thousands of dollars in development costs.
