Stem Accelerates Development of Power Electronics Control Systems with Model-Based Design

Stem, Inc. needed to accelerate development and certification of the PowerStore power‑electronics control system to meet an aggressive product timeline. They partnered with MathWorks and used Model‑Based Design with MATLAB and Simulink (including Simscape Electrical, Control System Toolbox, and Embedded Coder) to develop and validate control algorithms before hardware was available.

MathWorks’ tools enabled Stem to model the plant and controller, generate production C code, and rapidly iterate with real‑world tests and certification simulations; Stem deployed generated code to a TI DSP and refined hardware informed by simulation. The results: six months of development time saved, only one board respin (avoiding potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in respin costs), system delivering power five days after boards arrived, and successful TÜV UL 1741 and IEEE 1547 certification completed about 25% faster.
