Shanghai Electric Builds and Deploys Cost-Saving Enterprise Software for Planning and Designing Distributed Energy Systems

Shanghai Electric needed a web-accessible planning and design platform to evaluate payback periods, cash flows, and IRR for distributed energy systems that combine wind, solar, storage, CHP and grid interactions. The team had to process more than 10 years of hourly weather data, support frequent model updates as technologies evolve, and deploy solutions without relying on IT—so they turned to MathWorks, using MATLAB and MATLAB Production Server to build and operationalize their algorithms.

Working with MathWorks (including Consulting Services) Shanghai Electric developed reusable component models in MATLAB, used Financial Toolbox for financial calculations, packaged code with MATLAB Compiler SDK, and deployed it via MATLAB Production Server to a C# web front end. MathWorks’ tools cut delivery time by six months, enabled hundreds of users to run the DES-PSO app, allowed more than 10 updates in eight months without IT involvement, and helped redesign a desalination-plant system to improve IRR by 1 percentage point—saving roughly 2 million Chinese yuan.
