Self-Driving Trucks Could Alleviate Supply Chain Problems

TuSimple, a company developing autonomous semi-trucks, faced the challenge of safely and efficiently testing a complex brake-by-wire control system for its vehicles. The high cost and logistical difficulty of physical road testing made it an impractical primary method. To overcome this, TuSimple utilized MathWorks products, including MATLAB and Simulink, to create models and simulations.

By using these tools from MathWorks, TuSimple was able to perform 90% of its vehicle control unit testing in simulation, drastically reducing costs and saving time. This model-based approach served as a single source of truth for the team, enabled automatic code generation, and allowed for testing under various constraints. This hybrid V-model and Agile process allowed MathWorks to help TuSimple achieve an incredibly fast iteration cycle, releasing new software features in weeks instead of years.
