Schindler Elevator Moves from Physical Testing to Simulation

Schindler Group, a global elevator manufacturer, faced costly, time-consuming physical testing and difficult software validation because elevators are highly customized and integrated late with mechanical systems. To modernize testing, Schindler Group worked with MathWorks, leveraging products such as MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape to move from purely physical tests to model-based and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) approaches.

MathWorks helped implement the EDEn (Elevator Dynamics Environment) using MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, Simulink Real-Time, Embedded Coder, Simulink Test, and MATLAB Compiler to run offline simulations and HIL tests via web-based tools. The MathWorks-based solution cut software release testing from three–four weeks to a single overnight run, reduced required hardware, broadened test coverage, and enabled a shift from guarding worst cases to optimizing software for typical use.
