Saft Accelerates Development and UL Certification of Battery Management System Software with Model-Based Design

Saft worked with vendor MathWorks to speed development of next-generation battery management system (BMS) software for its Flex’ion Gen2 battery system and to certify it to UL 1998. The company needed a better way to validate software earlier in the process, since its previous hardware-first approach made defects harder to debug and increased the risk of late project delays.

Using MathWorks Model-Based Design with MATLAB and Simulink, plus IEC Certification Kit, Requirements Toolbox, Simulink Coverage, and Simulink Coder, Saft modeled both the plant and application software, ran large-scale desktop simulations and HIL tests, and generated production code and certification artifacts. The result was more than a 50% reduction in development and certification time, improved software quality, and streamlined UL certification, with first-attempt acceptance test success.
