Safran Builds Emergency Locator Beacon SDR Receiver Using Model-Based Design and Analog Devices System on Module Hardware

Safran, a leader in emergency locator beacon technology, needed to develop a receiver for second-generation beacon signals under a tight one-year deadline. The company had limited experience with digital receiver design and FPGA integration, so it turned to MathWorks and its Model-Based Design tools, including MATLAB and Simulink, to accelerate development.

MathWorks helped Safran model, simulate, and validate the SDR receiver, then generate HDL and C code for implementation on an Analog Devices system on module. Using products such as Communications Toolbox, HDL Coder, Embedded Coder, Fixed-Point Designer, and HDL Verifier, Safran shortened analysis and testing by eight months and cut FPGA implementation time by at least 50%, enabling a full prototype in just 12 months.
