RWE Develops and Deploys an Automated System for Natural Gas and Power Trading and Risk Management

RWE, one of Europe’s five largest electricity and gas companies and the leading power producer in Germany serving over 24 million customers, faced fragmented trading and risk-management tools that produced inconsistent results, could not handle nonlinear models, and required weeks of programming to update. To build a single, SAP‑integrated system that allowed analysts to update models themselves, RWE engaged MathWorks Consulting and chose MATLAB and MATLAB Compiler SDK for the project.

MathWorks consultants built and deployed EWiTA, a MATLAB‑based computational kernel integrated into RWE’s SAP framework, and delivered tools (FormelEditor, FormelTest, and an automated deploy button that compiles models to Java via MATLAB Compiler SDK) so analysts can create, test, and deploy models without coding. The MathWorks solution is in enterprise production: models now take minutes instead of weeks, update costs dropped to 10–20% of previous levels, results are consistent company‑wide (100% accurate), nonlinear pricing is supported—lowering risk and options spend—and MathWorks transferred knowledge so RWE can maintain the system independently.
