Rivian turned to MathWorks to help address the growing demand for full-vehicle simulations across engineering teams. As simulation requests increased, Rivian faced bottlenecks from sequential runs, limited access for non-simulation specialists, and inconsistent postprocessing and reporting of results. The company used MATLAB, Simulink, MATLAB Compiler, MATLAB Parallel Server, and Parallel Computing Toolbox to build its Vehicle Simulation Interface (VSI) platform.
With MathWorks software, Rivian created a scalable, user-friendly system for configuring, running, postprocessing, and sharing simulation results. The platform supports both local parallel execution and AWS-based cluster computing, cutting a 14-simulation job from more than 9 hours to 68 minutes. Rivian reports that in the past six months, the VSI platform has been used for more than 9,000 full-vehicle simulations totaling about 2 million simulated miles driven.
