Reutech Radar Systems Develops Naval Air and Sea Surveillance Radar with Model-Based Design

Reutech Radar Systems (RRS) faced the challenge of developing the core signal‑processing subsystem for its RSR 210N naval air and sea surveillance radar, a three‑channel pulse‑Doppler system that must detect small, fast targets in cluttered, harsh maritime environments and be rapidly updated after sea trials. To meet tight schedules and reduce risk from hand‑written HDL, RRS adopted Model‑Based Design from MathWorks, using MATLAB and Simulink plus tools such as HDL Coder, Fixed‑Point Designer, and Stateflow.

MathWorks’ workflow let RRS model, simulate, and verify signal‑processing components (pulse compression, Doppler filters, adaptive CFAR, etc.), generate over 75,000 lines of HDL for FPGA implementation, and iterate quickly with sea‑trial data. The MathWorks toolchain cut development effort by about two engineer‑years, produced reusable parameterized components, and delivered reliable firmware that remained largely unchanged for two years before first delivery.
