Respiri Develops Mobile App for Wheeze Detection and Asthma Management

Respiri, maker of the AirSonea® wheeze‑detection system, needed to develop an acoustic respiratory monitoring solution that could reliably detect wheeze patterns from 30‑second sensor recordings while measuring ambient noise—and to get those algorithms into mobile and server C code much faster than months of manual recoding. To meet this challenge the team used MathWorks tools, notably MATLAB®, MATLAB Coder™, Computer Vision System Toolbox™, and Signal Processing Toolbox™.

Using MathWorks software, Respiri converted recordings to spectrograms, developed spectrogram‑based wheeze and ambient‑noise algorithms in MATLAB, and used MATLAB Coder™ to generate and verify C code for integration into an iPhone app (Android planned). The MathWorks workflow cut manual coding effort, accelerated development iterations, and reduced code‑maintenance overhead—enabling faster updates and freeing engineering resources—while the AirSonea® system has achieved CE mark and TGA approval and is awaiting FDA clearance.
