Professor Reengineers MATLAB Course Overnight in Response to COVID-19

The University of California, Davis, faced an urgent challenge when COVID-19 forced Dr. André Knoesen’s large Engineering Problem Solving course to move online almost overnight. To keep the MATLAB-based class running remotely, he needed a way to preserve interactivity, grading, and student engagement without in-person lectures, labs, or traditional proctored exams.

MathWorks helped UC Davis adapt by using the existing Introduction to MATLAB zyBook along with MATLAB Grader, MATLAB live scripts, MATLAB Mobile, MATLAB Drive, and ThingSpeak to create an interactive remote learning experience. The result was a smooth transition that allowed Knoesen to cover all course material, shift to smaller assessments and a final project, and reduce suspected cheating to less than 5% in spring quarter, while also giving students practical tools they could apply in later coursework and projects.
