Preceyes Accelerates Development of World’s First Eye-Surgery Robot Using Model-Based Design

Preceyes, developer of the PRECEYES Surgical System for robot‑assisted vitreoretinal surgery, needed a real‑time control system that delivered sub‑millimeter precision and ensured patient safety while accelerating development for clinical investigation. To meet this challenge, Preceyes used Model‑Based Design from MathWorks—primarily MATLAB, Simulink, and Simulink Real‑Time—to model, simulate, and verify control logic and build the surgeon interface.

Using MathWorks tools, Preceyes created plant and controller models, ran system‑identification tests, generated code with Simulink Coder, and deployed the controller to a real‑time target while developing the touch‑screen UI in MATLAB; the core controller was developed by a single engineer. The system has been validated in 14 surgical procedures, provided strong safety assurance, and established a clear roadmap toward industrialization and CE registration.
