Ormiston College Secondary School Students Learn Math and Programming with MATLAB

Ormiston College, an independent coeducational secondary school in Queensland, sought to modernize its senior mathematics program—moving beyond graphing calculators and spreadsheets—to introduce programming to all year 11–12 students, better prepare graduates for STEM university courses, and upskill faculty for incoming students with basic coding experience. To accomplish this, the school adopted MathWorks products, deploying MATLAB and Simulink across campus via a Primary and Secondary School (PASS) license.

MathWorks supported Ormiston with a PASS license, a three-day onsite training course by a MathWorks engineer, and MATLAB Academy exercises, allowing teachers to embed MATLAB lessons and hands‑on projects (from plotting Stephen Curry’s shot to building Sierpinski-triangle apps and a LIDAR-based SLAM algorithm) into the curriculum. The MathWorks solution made technical computing easy to integrate in class, advanced faculty professional development, and better prepared students for university—complementing Ormiston’s record of more than 95% of graduates accepted into postsecondary institutions.
