OMRON Develops Solar Inverter Control Algorithm for Anti-Islanding Control

Omron needed a reliable anti‑islanding solution for residential and commercial solar inverters because traditional voltage‑based methods failed in high‑density installations and could not safely be validated on real hardware. To meet strict regulatory detection times (1 second single‑unit, 5 seconds multi‑unit) and reproduce difficult outage conditions, Omron used Model‑Based Design with MathWorks tools—MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape Electrical—to design and test a frequency‑based detection algorithm.

Using MathWorks software, Omron developed the patented AICOT control system, modeled the plant and grid in Simscape Electrical, and validated the controller with closed‑loop Simulink simulations and MATLAB analysis scripts. The result: islanding detection in under 0.2 seconds, integration testing time cut by more than 50%, data analysis completed four times faster, AICOT in production (554 units in Ota totaling >2,100 kW) and adopted as Japan’s official standard.
