Murata Manufacturing Reduces Development Time for Energy Management System Control Software by More Than 50% with Model-Based Design

Murata Manufacturing needed to develop its first energy management system (EMS) quickly despite limited prior experience and a three‑engineer team. To simulate inverters, converters, grid conditions and verify control logic before hardware testing, Murata turned to MathWorks’ Model‑Based Design tools—primarily Simulink, Simscape Electrical, Stateflow, Fixed‑Point Designer and Embedded Coder—to reduce risk and accelerate time‑to‑market.

Using MathWorks tools, Murata modeled the plant and PI controller, ran closed‑loop and abnormal‑condition simulations, auto‑scaled to fixed point, and generated production C code with Embedded Coder for TI Piccolo/Delfino microcontrollers. The result: control software development time dropped by more than 50% (completed in about six months with three engineers), the team produced defect‑free autogenerated code, and project ramp‑up was significantly shortened, enabling certification and reliability testing to move forward.
