Model-Based Design for 5G Development at Nokia

Nokia needed to accelerate and de-risk design of the digital front end (DFE) for 5G base stations, a task made complex by wideband operation, massive multichannel antennas, and stringent performance requirements. To address this, Nokia worked with MathWorks and adopted Model‑Based Design using MATLAB and Simulink to prototype, simulate, and validate DFE functions such as channel filtering, up/down conversion, digital pre‑distortion, gain control, and carrier combining/demultiplexing.

MathWorks helped Nokia implement model‑based workflows that increased flexibility and visibility across the entire DFE design flow, enabling faster execution, better understanding of design options, and measurable quality improvements. Using MATLAB and Simulink, Nokia was able to analyze and explore designs before building, dimension performance to eliminate bottlenecks, and use models as a common language for communication and automation, delivering faster development and more reliable DFE implementations.
