Manhattan College Offers Chemical Engineering Students a Control Room Experience with MATLAB

Manhattan College sought to provide its chemical engineering students with hands-on industry skills and a realistic control room experience for a gas permeation lab experiment. Using MATLAB and the Industrial Communication Toolbox from MathWorks, they developed a solution to allow remote control of physical laboratory equipment.

MathWorks' products enabled the creation of a custom app that lets students remotely operate the lab equipment and acquire data in real time. This solution allowed students to gain valuable experience by emulating different engineering roles in a plant control room environment. As a result, students developed in-demand industry skills, and the remote lab provides a template for other educators to conduct online labs.
