Manchester Metropolitan University Students Vote Math Best Overall Course Following Adoption Of MATLAB

Manchester Metropolitan University faced falling mathematics enrollment and needed to make the program more engaging and career‑relevant. To attract and retain students and boost employability, MMU partnered with MathWorks and adopted MATLAB (along with Simulink and the Symbolic Math Toolbox) across the mathematics curriculum.

MathWorks’ MATLAB and associated tools were integrated department‑wide, provided to students via the MATLAB and Simulink Student Suite, and used in lectures, labs, and project work to teach linear algebra, numerical methods, modeling, and dynamical simulation. As a result, enrollment quadrupled (from 45 to 156 students), student satisfaction and employability rose—students voted mathematics Best Overall Course at MMU—and teacher‑student engagement improved.
