Mahindra Electric Uses System-Level Simulation to Optimize Battery Thermal Management System for an Electric Vehicle

Mahindra Electric faced the challenge of optimizing a battery thermal management system (BTMS) for its electric vehicles to maximize cooling effectiveness while minimizing energy consumption. To address cell configuration, cooling‑circuit architecture, and efficient compressor control, the team used MathWorks tools—primarily Simulink, Simscape, and Simscape Electrical—to apply a Model‑Based Design approach.

Using MathWorks software, Mahindra Electric built and validated a system‑level simulation that modeled the battery, cooling and refrigeration circuits, vehicle dynamics, and driver behavior. The Simulink/Simscape model let the team tune parameters, select optimal components at their best operating points, and develop new compressor operation logic; the result was an optimized BTMS with validated performance improvements and better energy efficiency.
