KOSTAL Asia R&D Center Receives ISO 26262 ASIL D Certification for Automotive Software Developed with Model-Based Design

KOSTAL Group’s KOSTAL Asia R&D Center faced the challenge of developing an electronic steering column lock (ESCL) that met the highest functional safety standard, ISO 26262 ASIL D. To satisfy strict requirements including SIL/PIL back-to-back testing and to do so with limited time and resources, the team adopted MathWorks tools such as MATLAB and Simulink and sought vendor support to establish a certified development framework.

MathWorks implemented a Model-Based Design workflow using Simulink, Stateflow, Embedded Coder, Polyspace, Simulink Check/Coverage, Simulink Design Verifier and the IEC Certification Kit, and assisted in building a PIL testing framework and training the team. The result: the ESCL achieved ISO 26262 ASIL D certification and OEM production approval, development and certification time fell by 30%, 80% of logic errors were found during modeling, and a repeatable PIL framework for safety projects was established.
