Indian Institute of Science Engineering Students Use MATLAB to Solve Multidisciplinary Problems

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) needed a single, accessible platform to teach multidisciplinary engineering to graduate students from diverse backgrounds—covering FEM, electrostatics, mechanics, fluid dynamics, and more. To meet this challenge, faculty adopted MathWorks' MATLAB as the computational environment for MEMS and other mechanical engineering courses.

Using MATLAB, Dr. Rudra Pratap integrated hands-on FEM implementation, coupled electrostatic-mechanical simulations, ODE solvers, and FFT analysis into the curriculum, allowing students to build and visualize complete solutions in a single environment. The MathWorks solution increased student engagement, accelerated mastery of multidisciplinary topics, and produced measurable outcomes—students rapidly solving complex problems and earning industry job offers specifically because of their MATLAB experience.
