In-House Development with Model-Based Design Q&A with Weichai Power

Weichai Power, a diesel engine manufacturer headquartered in Weifang, China, needed to move ECU software development in-house to avoid costly, inflexible supplier dependence and to meet China’s National Emission Standard IV. To shorten the learning curve and support graphical design and automatic code generation, Weichai adopted MathWorks’ Model-Based Design (using MATLAB and Simulink).

MathWorks’ Model-Based Design and MISRA-compliant automatic code generation enabled Weichai to complete a production ECU from scratch in 36 months—40% faster than planned—reuse about 60% of the initial design for a new engine (cutting that ECU’s development time by half), rapidly build an in‑house control team, and significantly reduce development costs.
