HUBER+SUHNER Optimizes Cable Manufacturing Using MATLAB

HUBER+SUHNER, a global provider of electrical and optical connectivity solutions, needed to reduce the time and waste involved in selecting the right combination of part lengths for assembling custom data and power cables. Working with MathWorks, the company sought a way to replace hours of manual spreadsheet-based planning with a faster, more efficient process using MATLAB and Optimization Toolbox.

MathWorks helped HUBER+SUHNER build an optimizer application that automatically calculates the best cable part combinations for each order, then delivered it through an easy-to-use interface created with App Designer and deployed with MATLAB Compiler. The result was up to 75% less planning time, a 10–20% reduction in waste, lower costs, and a smaller carbon footprint from less unusable material.
