Horizon Wind Energy Develops Revenue Forecasting and Risk Analysis Tools for Wind Farms

Horizon Wind Energy faced unreliable, unscalable spreadsheet-based forecasting for wind farm revenue and risk because production varies with local wind and sites are geographically dispersed. To replace the fragile, manual process, Horizon turned to MathWorks tools—notably MATLAB and MATLAB Compiler along with several companion toolboxes—to build an automated, maintainable system that links price forecasts with volumetric wind estimates and produces revenue-at-risk projections.

Using MathWorks’ MATLAB, Database Toolbox, Econometrics Toolbox, Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox, Curve Fitting Toolbox, Spreadsheet Link, and MATLAB Compiler, Horizon developed a Price Reporting System (PRS) and a Portfolio Decision System (PDS). The MATLAB-based solution now runs automatically each morning, cuts processing from hours to minutes, integrates smoothly with enterprise IT, supports Monte Carlo risk modeling across 2,000+ scenarios, and improved risk management—enabling hedging decisions that saved the company millions of dollars.
