A MathWorks Case Study
Given Imaging, an Israeli biomedical company, set out to replace invasive endoscopy with a swallowable imaging solution and developed the PillCam® video capsule to visualize the small intestine. To meet this challenge, Given Imaging relied on MathWorks tools—primarily MATLAB along with Image Processing Toolbox and Signal Processing Toolbox—to prototype, test, and refine algorithms and system designs early in development.
Using MATLAB and companion toolboxes, the MathWorks solution enabled rapid algorithm development, signal and image processing (including FFT and visualization), and system verification, allowing the team to build a working product model in months. The FDA‑approved PillCam SB 2 is now used in over 1 million patients across 70 countries, captures about 50,000 images per exam, improves detection of ulcers and polyps, and has measurably enhanced diagnostic access and patient care.
