Georgia Tech Lowers Educational Barriers Through Software License

The Georgia Institute of Technology’s College of Engineering, home to more than 13,500 students, needed to broaden and simplify access to engineering software so students and faculty could focus on teaching and research instead of chasing licenses. Facing capacity constraints with a virtual desktop infrastructure and the desire to let students use their own laptops, the college partnered with MathWorks to provide campus-wide access to MATLAB, Simulink, and commonly used toolboxes via a Campus‑Wide License.

MathWorks implemented a phased Campus‑Wide License that moved the college from a network-license model to campus access, enabled student installs on personal laptops, and ultimately extended access to all MathWorks products. The change reduced computer‑lab and server demand by leveraging student machines, facilitated interdisciplinary and cross‑department courses, and simplified IT support interactions—allowing faculty to assign projects without worrying about software availability.
