GeoMechanics Cuts Product Development Costs by 50%

GeoMechanics International (GMI) needed a practical way for drilling engineers to predict and prevent wellbore instability by accurately gauging drilling mud weight and optimal trajectories in increasingly deep and complex wells. To build a user-friendly, field-ready tool that could model stress, fractures, pore pressure and trajectory interactions, GMI turned to MathWorks and its MATLAB environment and toolboxes.

Using MathWorks’ MATLAB, MATLAB Compiler, and the Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox, GMI developed modular forward‑modeling and Monte Carlo simulation tools with interactive GUIs and a compiled standalone application for non‑MATLAB users. The MathWorks-based solution halved product development costs, enabled faster response to customer requirements, and is used by more than 30 major exploration and production companies to save millions of dollars by preventing costly wellbore failures.
