Exponent Energy Develops 15-Minute Fast-Charging Battery System for Electric Vehicles Using Model-Based Design

Exponent Energy, an electric vehicle battery startup, needed to rapidly develop and validate a proof of concept for a 400V EV battery pack and fast charger capable of fully charging in 15 minutes. Working with MathWorks and using Model-Based Design with MATLAB and Simulink products, the company aimed to speed up development, improve collaboration, and simplify onboarding for a complex battery-and-charger system.

MathWorks enabled Exponent Energy to accelerate prototyping, code generation, and deployment using Embedded Coder and TI C2000 support, along with Simscape, Stateflow, and Vehicle Network Toolbox. The result was at least a fivefold improvement in development, testing, and verification speed, and three engineers were able to complete the 400V fast charger in just 10 days. Exponent Energy also achieved an accurate BMS with improved thermal management and battery health of more than 80% after 3,000 fast-charging cycles.
