Epson Toyocom Designs and Verifies Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuit in Two Months

Epson Toyocom faced a two-month deadline to develop a mixed-signal IC with a new 16-bit delta-sigma ADC and had no existing reference design to adapt. Exploring key parameters (input capacitance, op-amp gain, slew rate) was essential, but circuit-level and Verilog‑A simulations were too slow to enable the required design exploration, so Epson Toyocom turned to MathWorks and its MATLAB and Simulink Model-Based Design tools.

Using MathWorks’ MATLAB and Simulink, Epson Toyocom modeled the system, automated extensive parameter sweeps, diagnosed prototype distortion, and implemented a MATLAB-designed compensation algorithm in the Simulink model to verify fixes quickly. MathWorks’ tools cut simulation time from days to about one minute, reduced development time by 33% (meeting the two-month target vs an estimated three months), and lowered prototyping needs—saving Epson Toyocom millions of dollars.
