EMSolutions, which supports U.S. Navy test programs, faced a labor-intensive EMCON (emissions control) schedule‑planning workflow that relied on legacy software across multiple systems and required manual data transfer and reformatting. Needing a fast, easily trainable solution that could be verified for use on a classified network, EMSolutions turned to MathWorks and its MATLAB platform (including Mapping Toolbox, MATLAB Compiler, and Parallel Computing Toolbox) to avoid the long development times of low‑level languages.
Using MathWorks MATLAB integrated with Analytical Graphics' Systems Tool Kit (STK), EMSolutions developed an automated GUI application that communicates with STK via a COM interface, postprocesses geospatial results with Mapping Toolbox, and accelerates scenario processing with Parallel Computing Toolbox. The MathWorks-based system reduced schedule planning from about eight hours to roughly 10 minutes, halved development time, increased data-collection efficiency by 15%, produced about $40,000 in monthly savings for the customer, and is approved for and in use in Navy testing operations.
